"Out Of Country, In Control" is the name of the brochure. When you book an Avis car in the US before you leave for one of 38 countries, you`ve picked up a true travel partner.
You book a car. Before you leave the US (or Canada), call 800-297-4447 with your confirmation number. The service representative at the other end will give you the numbers to access "Avis on Call" and "Avis Message Center" in Europe.
The following are just some of the services available for each country: cost of a gallon of gas....driving license requirements...currency exchange rates...banking hours...speed limits...customs information...tipping guidelines...US embassy and consulate locations.
Avis can also provide "Personally Yours," their pre-printed itineraries for popular driving tours in areas of Britain, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany.
Avis On Call program can help smooth travel problems with roadside assistance, translations, finding English speaking doctors, and more. You must get the country-specific toll-free number from Avis before you leave the US.
Avis has a 24-hour message center as well. Leave or retrieve messages for parties in the US. They use a toll-free number as well to access messages to/from you!
The previous services are free to travelers who rent an Avis car and call the appropriate number to set up the services before they leave. I not aware of a comparable service from anyone else.
An option from Avis, for a fee, is to request a cell phone for use in Europe. They charge a nominal amount, send it to you before departure, you use as needed (you pay for minutes at the prevailing rate,) then when you get home return the phone to Avis in a prepaid package! Avis will even print some cards for you with your cell phone number on them!
