Tip of the Week

Stockholm is lovely. The capital is made up of 14,000 islands. I`ve seen people throw a fishing line over a bridge downtown during lunch time. Everyone speaks English; you could move there tomorrow and not have a problem. Because Sweden remained neutral during the World Wars, there are sections of the city with buildings that are hundreds of years old. The people are welcoming, facilities modern, food recognizable, and there`s a lot to see and do in and around this capital city.

Old Town is just that- the ancient part of town, the "Gamla Stan". Fancy hotels and mysterious aura from centuries past. You will need a camera!

The Palace is near downtown and has a display of jewels, armor and other royal trinkets

Skansen is an entire day event: an open air museum with 150 historical buildings; there`s also an amusement park and zoo/aquarium.

Take a tour through the City Hall. It`s where the Nobel Prizes are presented.

The Vasa Museum houses a preserved warship from the 17th century. It sunk in the harbor, was raised in 1961 and made into a museum which opened in the 1990`s.

Take a tour of the city from a boat on your third day or so- by then your feet will probably hurt from all the walking on hilly cobblestoned streets.

A fun day trip is a boat ride to Drottingholm Palace ("Queen`s House"), approaching it from water, the butter yellow palace and grounds are gorgeous. A self tour is at your own pace and it is charming.

* English is spoken by everyone, so don`t be afraid to go it alone rather than with a tour group

* Eat a good breakfast and lunch. Less expensive than dinner. Stockholm is pricey and a light dinner is a good way to economize

* Full or partial nudity on sunny days is not unusual in parks or other public areas. Don`t stare or take pictures, please!

* Imported alcohol is incredibly expensive.

* The subway is easy to use & goes to most touristy destinations in the city

* Don`t even take one drink then drive. Zero tolerance.

* Good shopping: crystal, Darlana horses, pewter (SAABs?)
