June 21, 2002, Newsletter Issue #80: Labor Day Weekend Suggestion: Detroit

Tip of the Week

The Ford-Detroit Jazz Festival always falls over Labor Day. This year just a few of the featured artists: Mavis Staples, Astral Project, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa, Pete Fountain, George Benson Quartet, plus dozens more local, national and international combos and artists.

The 6-week Michigan Renaissance Festival is in full swing by Labor Day. Allow a full day for Middle Ages fun & frolick. The Festival is about an hour north of the city. Food, shows, sword fighting, jousting, all manner of life from the days of olde. Fun for all ages- toddlers on up.

The Michigan State fair is a two week event, also overlapping the Labor Day weekend. Rodeo, agricultural products, live horses, pigs with piglets, rabbits, roosters & chickens in stalls/pens to visit, amusement games and rides. Big name entertainment, too.

The Detroit Tigers could be in town, an inexpensive few hours` entertainment.

Greektown, located downtown (recommend the Olympia Taverna for souvlaki) and the wonderful Detroit Zoo in suburban, easy-to-access Royal Oak round out the hot spots for family fun.

(Always recommended year-round: Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn.)
