February 1, 2002, Newsletter Issue #61: London Tea Party

Tip of the Week

Afternoon tea traditionally includes a pot of tea, finger sandwiches of salmon, tuna, or watercress, scones with clotted cream (my favorite- it`s cream churned to the point between whipped cream and butter), and biscuits (cookies).

Some venues offer live music.

Reservations are recommended.

Depending on where you take tea, you may choose to dress for the Palm Court at the Ritz or just drop in as you are at Harrod`s.

- The Palm Court, at the London Ritz. 2:00-6:00. Sittings from 3:30-5:00 require a reservation. Music.

- Fortnum and Mason department store on Piccadilly. Get there by 2:45 to secure a table.

- Brown`s Hotel has two sittings...3:00 or 4:45.

- Harrod`s. Knightsbridge, Monday to Saturday, 3:45-5:15. Georgian Restaurant, with live music.

- The Savoy Hotel, the Strand. 3:00p-5:30, with music. Sundays offer a tea dance, 4:30-6:30.

Prices range from about $28-$40 per person.

Outside London, tea rooms are abundant in small towns and villages. Try to experience a High tea at least once!

(Don`t mix your milk with lemon!)
