May 18, 2001, Newsletter Issue #28: Destination 101: Mexico-Shopping

Tip of the Week

In general, Mexico is a great place to buy jade in all colors, shapes, and varieties...amethyst... and native blankets.

Copper Canyon- hand woven baskets, wooden dolls

Cozumel- black coral jewelry

Guadalajara- ceramics, pottery, woodwork and leather

Guanjuato- silver and copper ware

Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo- ceramics, carved wooden objects

Merida- hand woven hammocks, Panama hats, embroidery

Oaxaca- black pottery and hand woven rugs

Puebla- intricate pottery and tiles

Puerto Vallarta- tapestries, stoneware, pottery and glassware

Queratero- opal items

San Miquel de Allende- tinware and ironwork

Taxco- silver jewelry and other decorative items

Tlaquepaque and Tonala- blown glass, ceramics and leather.

**Unless you are an expert and know the value and quality of a high-cost item, don`t purchase without certification, a receipt, and proper exporting paperwork. "Antiques" may or may not be such, and the Border Patrol may have a different opinion on whether your expensive souvenir can enter the US (or leave Mexico.) Always use a credit card, except for inexpensive items. Keep receipts and purchases packed separately on your return for easy customs declarations.**
