Tip of the Week

Fast facts:

The Tower of Pisa is reopening to the public June 17. It had been closed for restoration since 1990.

Private visits to galleries and collections can sometimes be arranged with lots of research and persistance. A Caravaggio exhibit just opened at Palazzo Giustiniani. Private visits may also be available for the Sistine Chapel (Vatican) and St. Mark`s (San Marco)in Venice.

Don`t miss the houses of worship- many churches and cathedrals contain priceless masterpieces as well as stunning architecture. (Don`t take pictures inside or otherwise disturb the worshippers. You are the guest in their house.)

Research days of operation and hours each site is open- hate to allot a Tuesday only to find the "Sorry" sign up! (The Sistine Chapel has a very tight schedule, plus you`ll want to be there by 7:30am for a 9:00 opening.)

Florence- many examples by Michelangelo, including "David"...architecture, paintings and sculptures are everywhere. Three good places to go for his work: Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Cappelle Medicee, and the Galleria dell`Accademia.......
.....Uffizi Gallery- painting by Botticelli, Raphael and more. Collection was based on the Medici family`s personal collection. Also famous for drawings and etchings.

Rome-Vatican City- Vatican Museums for the Sistine Chapel, paintings by Raphael and Fra Angelico........the Domus Aurea- Nero`s Villa, elaborate painting, sculptures and more.

Venice- home of internationally famous glassworks, mosaic work, as well as the Doge`s Palace with paintings by Tintoretto.....Galleria dell`Accademia, a museum featuring a Bellini alterpiece and paintings by Carpaccio and Titian among others.

Milan- DaVinci`s Last Supper is on the wall of a convent, also turn around and see the mural opposite it- not as famous, but I liked it!

Allow lots of time - a week in Rome is not too much. You`ll not want to miss the Colosseum, Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, and the (Three coins in the..) Trevi Fountain.
