April 6, 2001, Newsletter Issue #22: Traveling with Kids

Tip of the Week

* Make an appointment with a pediatrician for a check up and required shots if you`re taking your children overseas for any length of time. Diseases that barely exist in the US are active in other parts of the world.

* Don`t assume that any body of water...stream, pond, river...is safe for swimming. Parasites can be dangerous to the uninitiated.

* Tell your adolescents about sexual activity, tattoos and piercing dangers- hepatitis B or worse!

* Stock up on prescription medicines. Foreign "equivalents" might not be identical, may be more expensive, or counterfeit. Bring medicines in their original containers.

* If you need special childrens meals, contact the airlines at least two days prior to your flight.

* Carry 24 hours` worth of food and drinks for the very little travelers. Airport delays, connections, and price gouging at airports will make your pre-planning worth it.

* Make sure your children have a card of some sort with the name, address and phone of your hotel(s). Reunions will be easier.

* sunscreen

* Children`s formula insect repellant

* Schedule frequent bathroom, eating, drinking, and play-breaks for the kids. They tire easier than you do, and a steadier pace may lengthen your energies.
