October 5, 2001, Newsletter Issue #46: Plan a Safe Trip

Tip of the Week

* Be aware of dates; holidays, anniversaries of historically significant events and the like. Note "their" dates- their "Alamos"- days when we may have been the aggressors.

* Consider vacation spots at off times or seasons- DisneyWorld in early May; New York in winter (except holidays)- not only cheaper, but less touristy.

* Areas of the world which are perceived as being low-risk include Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of the Orient and Pacific, like Japan and Australia.

* Behave in a low-key manner. Do not flash cash or get overly intoxicated. Avoid calling attention to yourself.

* Notice your surroundings. Learn to register an exit path.

* The USA is not just the mega-metropolises. There are museums, festivals, cultural offerings and recreational options everywhere. Call or order online a tourism packet from a state or city which interests you. Use a search engine to find info using "tourism" as a keyword. (Example: Chattanooga tourism)

* Do not carry a gun, knife or harmful spray unless you are qualified to use them, and they are legal to possess. If you aren`t trained to use a weapon, you could hurt yourself, lose it to a criminal, or have it turned against you. If you do not have the proper license/authority to carry it will be YOU who ends up behind bars.

* Many cruise ships are taking their European itineraries and re-deploying them to the Caribbean. This will probably force cruise fares down next year.

Enjoy the freedom to travel, just don`t forget to pack the common sense.
